News has been circulating throughout the afternoon that the
Anaheim Mighty Ducks will hire actor and former star of the Mighty Ducks
Trilogy, Emilio Estevez, to become the head coach of the team.
“I tried telling them that those were just movies, and I don’t
have any real coaching experience,” the actor said outside of his
Hollywood home. “It is a pretty sweet gig though. If they want me that badly, I
guess I can give it a shot.”
Estevez played Gordon Bombay in Disney’s “The Mighty Ducks,”
in 1992, starring as an arrogant and cocky lawyer who was sentenced to community service by coaching
a peewee hockey team. After his first
season with the Ducks, he leads the team to the Minnesota State Championship.
Estevez reprised his role as Bombay in Mighty Ducks 2 and Mighty Ducks 3.
“I had some of my favorite times filming those movies, winning fake hockey games” said
a nostalgic Bombay, excited to get back on the ice. “It will honestly just be
nice to have a job again.”
Mighty Ducks general manager, Bob Murray, said this is a
great day both for Estevez and the Ducks. “We are really excited for Emilio to
come be part of this organization,” said Murray. “I saw what he was able to do
with District 5 and turn them into competitors for Team USA in the Junior
Goodwill Games, and we feel he will take our team to another level.”
The actor said he was very surprised to receive a phone call
from Mighty Ducks' owner Henry Samueli.
Estevez said after several attempts to tell the team he was just playing
Gordon Bombay and in actuality knew very little about hockey, he finally just accepted
the position and brought on former co-star, Joshua Jackson (Charlie Conway) as
his assistant coach.
“I figured if there was anyone else that became famous from
the Mighty Ducks’ movies and later flamed out, it was definitely Josh,” Estevez
said in a conference call today. “According to Bob [Murray], Jackson displayed great
leadership in the movies when he gave up his spot on the team for Russ Tyler
and helped me coach our team to the gold.”
Estevez realized he had not been offered a legitimate acting job in years, and figured this would be a good opportunity to get his name back out there.
“I’ve watched my brother {Charlie Sheen} literally be the
biggest fuck up in the world and he gets acting jobs thrown at him left and
right,” a dejected Estevez admitted. “I really think this is finally going to
make everyone finally see us as equals.”
This timing of this news is very interesting after recent
reports link the Vancouver Canucks' open coaching position to peewee legend and well-known asshole,
Jack Reilly. This could be an opportunity
to reignite a dormant rivalry between the two "coaches". Reilly has been looking to move on from the
Hawks after coaching the peewee team for 40-plus years despite having no kids
to ever go through the league.
